With the end of 1996 Microsoft released version 1.0 of Windows CE®, a 32 bit operating system with Windows 95/98 look and feel. This first version 1.0 has not been a commercial success and was succeeded by a version 2.0 which was more successful being available on additional platforms.
Windows CE was designed from the ground up for advanced 32 bit embedded systems. Although Windows CE supports a major part oft the Win32 API, it only requires a small amount of resources
For those wondering what CE stands for: CE is no abbreviation of anything specific, it is just a merge of letters standing for characteristics Windows CE tries to have, such as Compactness, Compatiblity, Companion and Efficiency.
Although Windows CE is a boosting product, it isn't everybodies darling. Since it is in integrative component of the respective hardware, the product cannot be bought at your local software shop. The adaption of Windows CE to the actual enviroment is a complex job requiring deep system and hardware knowledge.
Windows CE provides a well-defined interface for integrating new drivers allowing additional hardware to be supported. telos has designed and implemented several of those drivers.
