Tracii 400 Installation: Hints and Troubleshooting
22-05-03 12:21

This article outlines some common user problems, questions and solutions regarding the installation and configuration of Tracii 400 and related software. Please read and follow this article carefully before contacting telos support about an installation problem.

In order to use Tracii 400 you need:

  • A PC running Windows 95, 98, ME, NT 4.0, 2k or XP. Unsupported software is even still available for Windows 3.11.
  • An unused bidirectional parallel port - preferably LPT1. You need to set this port to EPP mode in your system BIOS.
  • A fully connected shielded cable (not longer than 2 meters) with one male and one female DSUB25 connector without any cross-over connections.
  • An external DC power supply unless you intend to power Tracii 400 from the power lines of the I²C-bus connector. Note that ground is located on the outside of the connector. Supply voltage for external power should be between 7 and 9 v.
  • A stucko connector providing the interface to your i²c application.
  • The Tracii 400 software. TraciiTalk is always available, TraciiSpy is a separate product which you can only use if you have purchased it.

Regardless of any PC or i²c connection the Tracii LEDs should indicate a correct status once you apply power to Tracii 400 board. Please verify correct jumper settings and check This article for further information on these LEDs.

If these LEDs are not operating correctly, please check your power supply and jumper settings first.

Tracii 400 has two melt fuses which may be damaged. Make shure these fuses are not blown.

If the LEDs are working, you can go ahead and install the software using the supplied setup program.

The software should find Tracii 400 board upon startup.

If it doesn´t, please double-check that your Parallel cable is connected properly and your port is set to EPP mode.

Note that Tracii 400 does not work on some older Compaq models

If the board is not recognized it is a good idea to test the parallel port with another device, for instance with a printer.

While using Tracii 400, please make sure no other device driver (scanner etc.) is conflicting with the Tracii software by expecting another device on the parallel port.

In order to use TraciiSpy, you need a license file. This file is usually on your installation cdrom and has a name like TrciSpy_xxxx_yyy.lf where xxxx and yyy correspond to the serial number of your Tracii 400 board.

If TraciiSpy complains about missing license, please check that the license file in the TraciiSpy directory matches the board number.

TraciiTalk does not require any license and should therefore work even without any license file present on the system.

If you have problems running the Tracii software, please make sure you use the lates version of it which is available on

our download page.

If neither Tracii Talk nor Tracii Spy is able to find Tracii 400 you can use the DOS Test Application to make sure that you have no hardware problem. Please boot the PC in the DOS mode and start the test program. Do not start it from a DOS-shell!

If you are still having troubble getting Tracii 400 to work, please try it on another machine to make sure that there is no Windows or PC hardware related problem. This may sound inconveniant but with the growing complexity of PC installations there is almost no other way to determine the cause of such problems.
